Built by a Driver.
For Every Driver.

DriverWell wasn't created in a boardroom. It was born from 30 years on the road, from the darkest moments of one man's life, and from a promise to make sure no driver ever has to face those moments alone.

Peter's Story

In his own words

I'm Peter McKenna. I'm 52 years old, married with three grown-up children, and I spent 30 years of my life as an HGV driver. The road was my life — it's all I knew.

In 2018, I was diagnosed with COPD and had to leave the industry. Losing my career felt like losing my identity. I didn't just lose a job — I lost the routine, the purpose, the camaraderie with other drivers. Everything that had kept me going.

What followed was the hardest period of my life. I made several attempts to take my own life. I had multiple hospital admissions. In 2020, I suffered respiratory failure that nearly killed me.

But I survived. And when I came through the other side, I made a decision: I was going to use everything I'd been through to help the drivers who are still out there, still struggling in silence, still thinking they have to just get on with it.

That's how DriverWell was born. And I'm not looking back.

The Journey

1988–2018

30 Years on the Road

Peter spent three decades as a professional HGV driver, living the reality of long hours, isolation, and the mental pressures that come with life on the road. He saw first-hand how drivers struggled in silence.

2018

Forced Off the Road

After being diagnosed with COPD, Peter had to leave the industry he'd given his life to. The transition was devastating — losing not just a career but an identity.

2018–2020

The Darkest Times

Peter faced his own mental health crisis, including multiple attempts to take his own life and several hospital admissions. In 2020, he suffered respiratory failure that nearly killed him.

2020–2024

Turning Pain into Purpose

After surviving, Peter made a decision: he would fight for the drivers still out there. He became an ambassador for Grassroots Suicide Prevention and founded the HGV Networking Group to give drivers a voice.

2025–Present

DriverWell is Born

DriverWell launched as a free mental health platform built by a driver, for drivers. Mood tracking, stress relief, peer support, crisis resources, fatigue management — everything Peter wished had existed when he needed it most.

Grassroots Suicide Prevention Ambassador

Trained. Committed. Fighting for every life.

Peter is an official ambassador for Grassroots Suicide Prevention, a UK charity dedicated to saving lives by breaking the stigma around suicide and equipping communities with the knowledge to help those in crisis.

This isn't a badge on a website — it's a commitment. Peter has been trained in suicide awareness and intervention, and brings that expertise to everything DriverWell does. Every resource, every helpline, every word on this platform is informed by real training and real experience.

The Mission

"The transport industry loses drivers every year to mental health crises that could have been prevented. DriverWell exists to change that — one driver at a time. It's completely free, completely anonymous, and built for the people who keep our nation moving."
