Eye Health and Driving

Practical routes for drivers and other transport workers who notice a vision change, need an eye examination or have a question about driving standards.

No eyesight test, diagnosis or licensing decision
DriverWell has paused its browser vision self-check. Screen size, viewing distance, lighting and device behaviour cannot establish that a person meets a legal or clinical standard.

Use an optometrist, ophthalmology service or other qualified professional for an individual examination. Use current DVLA guidance for licence requirements and condition-specific notification questions.

If vision changes suddenly or you have symptoms that concern you, do not rely on this page. Follow current NHS urgent-care guidance and do not undertake a safety-critical task you cannot do safely.

Practical next steps

Arrange a professional eye examination
Tell the optometrist about your work, licence group, prescribed lenses and any changes you have noticed. Follow the professional's advice about further assessment.
Check current licensing guidance
Rules depend on the condition, treatment, visual function and licence group. DriverWell does not maintain a simplified report or no-report list.
