Leaving the armed forces is one of the biggest transitions a person can make. The structure, purpose, and camaraderie of military life do not always translate easily into civilian employment - and for many veterans, finding a career that matches the discipline, responsibility, and sense of mission they are used to can be a real challenge.
Transport and logistics is one of the sectors best suited to veterans. The skills you developed in the forces - situational awareness, working under pressure, following procedures, leading teams, and maintaining complex equipment - are exactly what the industry needs.
And there is an organisation dedicated to making that transition as smooth as possible.
Who Are Veterans into Logistics?
Veterans into Logistics is a registered UK charity (charity number 1198343) that provides fully funded HGV driver training and employment pathways specifically for ex-forces personnel.
Founded to address the significant shortage of HGV drivers in the UK while simultaneously supporting the veteran community, the charity has helped over 1,168 veterans since 2020 - and that number is growing.
Their partners include some of the biggest names in UK logistics: ASDA, Booker, Muller, Armstrong Logistics, and Bunzl. These are not just training partners - they are employers actively looking to hire veterans.
What Does the Programme Offer?
The Veterans into Logistics programme covers everything you need to get your HGV licence and into employment:
- Fully funded Cat C and Cat C+E licence training - the cost of HGV training (which can run to several thousand pounds) is covered in full
- Theory test preparation and support
- Practical driving training with DVSA-approved instructors
- CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) - the qualification required for professional HGV drivers
- Employment support - CV writing, interview preparation, and direct introductions to hiring partners
- Ongoing mentoring from veterans already working in the industry
Who Is Eligible?
The programme is open to veterans of any branch of the UK armed forces - Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, and Reserves. You do not need to have driven HGVs in the military. Many participants come from infantry, engineering, logistics, and support roles.
You will need:
- A full UK driving licence (Category B)
- To be within a reasonable distance of a training centre, or willing to travel
- A genuine commitment to a career in transport
